A lot can happen in a month. Last I wrote, things were going well. Then, on December 3, in what I will recall as a despicable manner, I was laid off from my job. Always looking for the silver lining, I found the time off refreshing. I volunteered for my daughter's classroom Christmas party (bean bag toss, pin the red nose on Rudolph, and crafts!); volunteered at her school's Christmas cottage (a gift store for the kids); I sewed my daughter her beloved dress-up wedding gown; I found a better job; I genuinely enjoyed relaxing. I had some fun with the kiddo too...and I wanted to take this opportunity to mention some favorites. (A not-so-favorite: she fell down the stairs this past week...only bruised her face but nearly gave me a heart attack).
I love how she still says spaghetti (spa-geg-E), Toaster Strudel (toots-a-roodle), and breakfast (bres-kiss). I adore her imaginary play, dance, and conversations. While the top-of-the-lung, constant singing can sometimes be a form of torture, I adore it too. She's recently gotten into playing with our old Wii system and it is adorable and fun to watch her learn. It is amazing too to watch her learn. She picks up on everything, like saying the phrase, "smashed it" when doing a good job. It's fun to hear her converse and in mid discussion pause to say, "I don't know the words" and then describe to me what it is she needs help with...and of course the fury that ensues when I don't know the answer. She took her googly "reading glasses" to Grandpa's on Christmas Eve where she, Grandpa, and Uncle Terry took turns trying them on producing the most classic of photos.
There are things that happen, simple moments, phrases, or details that I hope I never forget. It would tear me apart to lose those memories. Her voice, mannerisms, facial expressions, and hugs are the things that make living everything it should be.
I'll simply end with the note that Santa brought her a new bike for Christmas. She's trying to convince me that it's a great idea for me to ask Santa for a new bike for me next Christmas!

Annual Check Ups
Yesterday was phenomenal. We pushed the boundaries and had Lil Bit go to both her routine medical and dental exams yesterday, all in one afternoon.
The stats:
28 pounds (gained 3 pounds; which is the low end of the average for weight gain in a year)
39" tall (gained 3 inches which is greater than the 2" average per year)
20/40 vision which is good for a child her age
1 flu vaccine, likely the very last "easy" shot we'll have since it's now ingrained in her memory
Good teeth, she keeps them clean!
It's good to have her love going to the dentist...I hope it stays that way for quite some time!

Things Are Getting Serious
For some reason, lately, Lil Bit has acquired an uncanny logic and ability to guilt me into things. I'll have to step up my game to battle her now.
Sunday she told me that I had to play with her and when I gave her a blank stare, she said, very simply, "you haven't played with me all day mommy, you have to play cars with me now". I felt so guilty I couldn't say no. Also in the same day, she held an empty cup up and told me she had to have it to catch her tears in, so that I could see them. My heart dropped to my stomach...
Yesterday morning she looked at some photos of herself in the house. She asked if I still had those outfits or if I had given them to "Auntie Esa or Baby Jonah" to which I replied that I had not given them away because they were just too cute. She gave me a peculiar sort of look and told me to get rid of them, they were just clothes. I guess she won't be a pack rat like her mom.
I'm always taken aback when these things happen, but I just cling to the sweet things she says that reminds me just how young she is, like "granpa and granpas" instead of "grandma and grandpas" or target for guitar; spa-geg-eeee for spaghetti and toots-a-roodles forToaster Strudels.

First Parent Teacher Conference
I'm writing this post after the fact. It's actually November 18 as I write this, but I'll change the post to October 28.
October 28, 2014 would be the date of my first ever parent-teacher conference as a parent. I was giddy excited about the 15 minutes I would have with Lil Bit's teacher and the insight into a world I could not see.
Her teacher, kind as she is, didn't say anything bad about her. Skilled in the art of speech, anything she would have said that could have been negative would have been skewed in such a way that it would come out as a compliment and I would have thanked her for it.
I do know that her teacher said that my little miss is a blessing to have in the classroom and that all the kids are very close. She behaves well and has a little bit of a leader in her. She's also an excellent cutter with scissors (egads) and surprisingly uses her right hand to cut. The numbers that she can identify are 3, 8, and 10. She can identify all shapes but has trouble with rectangles and squares (and really, I get that, those can be hard).
So, as far as firsts go, that one was an absolute delight!

So Many Firsts
The first few weeks of school have been great. Lil Bit loves it. She has been line leader & flag holder. Today she brought home the Share Bag so she can put one item in it to show her class. Today she also brought home her first order of Scholastic Books!!!! Also today (so so much stuff), she brought home her first fundraiser! Rob & Brandy were officially the first people to contribute to her fundraiser! !
Today was also the first time Lil Bit came home and told me a boy shoved her. Nor really knowing what happened I didn't push for info too much. I could only gather that it was a boy, he pushed, & Lil Bit didn't do anything about it. She did say that if he pushes her 3 times, she would push him out of the classroom. Now I have to teach her that there are other ways of handling things before pushing back. So soon?!

Wine Weeder
Today marked the official first week of school for Lil Bit! She loves school and looks forward to the next class! Tonight she was telling me about school and told me she couldn't wait to be the wine weeder! Not understanding what wine weeder were I asked & she told me they stand in front and walk, not run, and weed the class. It then occurred to me that she was talking about being the line leader! She's upset she hasn't had a turn yet. "I was waiting and waiting but no one called me, that's the truth".

Tears in My Eyes
Today Lil Bit met her teacher...she was so excited!
When she went to bed tonight she was crying (overly tired & she hit her elbow). It was adorable when she said "I can't sleep, I have tears in my eyes".

Registered for School...and the PTA!
While I'm not so excited about my baby going to school...yesterday she was officially registered. Sunday we meet her teacher.
I guess the one good thing is that I am now part of the PTA. I hope I can help!

Many More Firsts
My Lil Bit is growing up way too fast for my comfort. We're looking into getting her a big girl bed which would allow us to paint her room and decorate it as she sees fit...she gets to choose decor.
We also have officially signed her up for preschool. How am I ever going to walk her down the hall and send her off to school without crying???
We shopped for school supplies for the first time, a joy I looked forward to for some time, but now that it's here, it's just too fast.
She went to her first baseball game at Busch Stadium on Sunday, August 03. It was Fred Bird's birthday; lots of fun stuff happening. The highlight though was that Lil Bit got a promotional giveaway...a mini Clydesdale from Build-a-Bear. That sealed the deal for her.
So many changes...how will I ever survive?

Dentist
Lil Bit had her first dental appointment yesterday and she did very well. She sat in my lap in the chair while the hygenist counted her teeth, polished them, and did an exam. The dentist came in and looked too. All the while Lil Bit behaved well and let them check out her teeth. She was excited to leave with a new princess toothbrush and sparkle toothpaste! She even got to pick out some toys!
She does have a tiny pinhole of a cavity that we will attempt to have filled. This could be interesting...
In other notes...bedtime tantrums are back (save me). We've been successfully using the potty for a while now and even staying dry at night!

How Your Day Was?
First time at the movie theater...Wherenberg in Fairview Heights. Saw Rio 2 (she says, "I like this movie!" )...looking forward to Planes 2 this summer (she shouts, "I see Dusty!").
Mom went with us, Lil Bit did really well and quite enjoyed herself.
On a different note, one of my favorite things that my little turkey does is asks me how my day was. Sometimes it's in the car ride home, and sometimes it's at the dinner table. It started with my asking how her day was and has morphed into her being empathetic and asking me how my day was..."how your day was mommy?"
I adore it. I adore it more than a person can even know. Along with those good hugs she gives me...the one's where she pats my back.

Sweet Snuggles
I was sad and crying this evening as I laid next to Lil Bit while she tried to go to sleep. Despite the fact that she was purposefully being a pain in the hiney she stopped for a moment and asked what was wrong. She then handed me her snuggle blanket and told me it would make me feel better because it made her feel better all the time. Sometimes when she shines through I know everything will be all right.

An Accident Free Day
I had to wait until the day was over but yesterday Lil Bit had an accident free day including overnight. So proud of my peanut!

We had a full day of using the potty...including using the potty at Barnes and Noble! Big achievements today.

Bella
This morning Bella was sitting in Lil Bit's bedroom while she was getting dressed. Bella, being the gaseous dog that she is, farts. The following conversation ensued:
Lil Bit: Mom, it smells like Bella in here.
Me: Well she is stinky today and she is in your room.
Lil Bit: Can you make her leave? She's stinky.
Me: It's okay babe, we're leaving in a few minutes, let her be.
Lil Bit: I just want to be somewhere that doesn't smell like dog ass.
Can argue that one!

Swings
I taught Lil Bit how to swing today by kicking her feet. She's actually tall enough to reach the swings on her on so she got on one and started off on her on..."swing and kick my butt; swing and kick my butt"...

Ladders and Firetrucks
Yesterday Lil Bit used scissors for the first time ever. I could not bear to watch her because I was so nervous but after trying to hold them a few different ways, she figured it out and was expertly cutting away strips of paper!
Something else to note: the other night I was telling her some made up stories at bedtime. In this particular story I said something about people being in trees. She stopped me to ask how people got into the trees. I answered with what I thought was an appropriate answer: they climbed. She thought for a moment and said, "no mommy, I know how they got in the tree; ladders and fire trucks".
Can't argue with that!
